We often do virtual consults first, as many of our patients come from far away. When you first start the process for the removal of buccal fat in Chicago, you will meet with Dr. Benjamin Caughlin (virtual or in person) in a consultation to talk about:

During: Where The Magic Happens

The word procedure is often a scary one that makes most people nervous, but we assure you that you are in the best hands with Dr. Caughlin. Many offices think that this is a quick few minute procedure. However, Dr. C really takes his time. Depending on your discussion with Dr. C the procedure can involve buccal fat pads alone, or tightening all 4 tissue layers to really give that “snatched” look (instagram and selfie friendly)! The entire process can depend on each patient, but it usually is a quick 40 minutes where you will be placed under local anesthesia (often with a “chill pill” on board), you won‘t feel any pain, but you will be awake during the procedure.

After the area is prepped correctly and numb, small incisions will be made to the inside of the cheek. Every incision is made with accuracy and precision, ensuring that the buccal fat is safely removed. Again, depending on what you want, Dr. Caughlin can tighten multiple layers, or just make it more of a soft/subtle change. The key is for the doctor and the patient to be on the same page. Dr. Caughlin will then carefully close the incisions with dissolvable stitches. After all is said and done, you will be able to walk out of the clinic the same day, and you will be able to return home and start the recovery.

Dr. Caughlin has a specialized pre and post operative protocol to prevent infection and lead to a speedy recovery. This will be published in an international journal before the end of the year.

After: Your Road To Recovery and Amazing Results

After the procedure, it’s time to get ready to go home, get some rest, and wait for the results. Before you head to your house you will be given a few things to prevent infection, Dr. Caughlin will explain what you need to do to take care of the incision, and go over any dietary restrictions. Full recovery from buccal fat removal takes around three weeks. The true results takes up to 3 months to set in. It takes this amount of time because once the volume has been removed the tissues need to heal and tighten to create the contours.
